Production Blog: Finishing Touches

Image
Today I decided to do a little film review and put some final touches on my film to ensure that it is the best quality possible. After reviewing my film many times, I noticed that there were a few key things I could touch up on. The main things I saw is the need to fix many of the editing aspects in the film including making it simpler and removing unnecessary special effects. I noticed the music was a little off and the fact that it should only be used in scenes that actually need it rather than being forced. I fixed these points of emphasis by going back into the film and fixing some of these little things. Because most of these problems were with editing and not the film itself, they were relatively easy to fix. Going back and reviewing the film again, I had also noticed the special effects were a little forced and decided to get rid of them completely as they did not add to the film as intended. To address the music issue, I had cut down music to scenes that needed them most, lim

Production Blog: Final Day of Editing

Image
Today I plan on finishing editing my film. The past two days of editing have been fairly productive, so I do not have a lot to do. I do still plan on piecing some final things together that may have been missed. I start by smoothing out transitions between clips as I do not believe that they were as sharp as they could be. I also noticed parts of the film where our voices were being diminished by other noises and tried to sort that out. I did that by layering the sounds and bringing out our voices over the rest of the noise. This worked well and I saw major improvement. This definitely helps make our voices clearer and makes the film a lot more pleasing from an audio standpoint. I keep looking around for errors that I could have possibly made editing but to be honest I was growing quite tired and had spent quite some time today trying to piece together these edits. I plan on completely finishing my film in the next go and looking at it now, it does not look like a whole lot needs t

Production Blog: Back to Editing

Image
Today I decided that I would try and finish up on the editing that I had not completed in my last session with my group. This included integrating the music and trimming clips to make sure that I can fit the film within my 5-minute time constraint. This was a difficult task as I had a lot of clips and had to shorten some to fit within the constraint. I chose the scenes that were most important first to have an estimate of how short I needed to cut the clips that were less important. Once I did this, I got to editing and was able to do enough editing to have plenty of space for the more important clips and also saved copies of the clips I edited just in case we needed to fill in extra time. Next, I sampled the music over my film to see if it fit what I was trying to achieve. It worked and I made adjustments as needed. There was little more I could do with the film I have now and just re-watched and made small adjustments where I thought was necessary. I wrapped up what I had and calle

Production Blog: Beginning to Edit

Image
Today, me and my group began the editing process for my film. We were falling a bit behind schedule so we thought we jump ahead and get to editing early. I have finally finished the three scenes for the film and the goal today was to piece these together to make them transition properly and maybe begin to integrate sound effects and maybe start to add our music as well. I am using iMovie initially to edit my film but I am thinking of moving over to a more advanced software or editing technology later in the editing process. I started by adding all 3 scenes in order and trying to create a smooth transition between them that would not cause confusion. I achieved this simply by just making sure there was no delay between the scenes and ensuring that it was as seamless as a transition as possible. Next, I went over parts of scenes that I thought sound effects would help with the scene. I used a running sound effect as if the actors were running very hard to make the running seem mor

Production Blog: Filming the Heist

Today is my final day of filming and I could not be more excited! I have been waiting to film this scene since it was first drawn up in me and my groups story board. This is the third and final scene of my opening scene and I am excited to get it underway. I start the day by getting to my filming location on time and with my group. We are filming at Hamill Tire, Luke's dad's shop, for this scene as it was the closest, we could get to a bank looking location. We start by setting up all of our equipment and set up our lighting and cameras properly. We put our costumes on and get ready to film. Our costumes are dark and shady looking for this scene as we are robbing a bank. As I get set, I go over my lines once more in my head and get ready to go! We start filming the scene and use many action shots to really show how intense the scene is. The scene is fast paced, and we wanted to encapsulate this within our film by using tracking shots at every opportunity. We shot each sho

Production Blog: Filming Again!

Today I was able to continue the filming of my final task. Me and my group congregated after school today at our filming location. The place we filmed today is the library as it offers the perfect setting for the scene we are trying to film. Next, we set up our set outside and prepared to film. We made sure that all of our camera angles and lighting was set up properly before beginning the filming process. Then, we took our places and began to film. Cayden was behind the camera while me, Luke, and Ben were acting on set. We picked off where we left off and started filming the 2nd scene. We use long shots to show the whole area that we are in and tracking shots to track each person. We change the lighting depending on where each person is and use close shots to show expressions and feelings. This scene took a while to film as there was a lot going on at once and a lot to make sure got fit in in a small amount of time. We spent a while filming the scene multiple times over and ove

Production Blog: Canceled Plans

Image
Unfortunately, me and my groups plans got canceled today due to a mandatory meeting for football that was required for a school trip that we would all be attending. Today, the plan was to continue filming for my movie when under very short notice, a meeting had popped up. The location was set up to film as well as props and costumes as me and my group were ready to proceed with the filming process. Very suddenly though, it all came crashing down as we were called up on to a meeting by our football coach. Although filming was all set up and I was ready to continue the process of filming, me and my group decided that we would have to reschedule. I would never let a day go to waste though and used this little time I had to discuss with my group on a different day. We already have scheduled a different day which we will continue our filming and are excited to continue making progress with our project. In the meantime, I will keep reviewing the film I already have and look at different th

Production Blog: Music time

Image
Today, for my short film, me and my group decided that we would dedicate a day to pick out the different songs and music we will be using for our film. Music is important in any good film and therefore we wanted to ensure that we would have music on our film that will enhance the film that much more and fit to our needs. Most of the day was spent browsing through different genres of music and going back to our genre research to see which music typically is used in an action film like ours. Fast paced, high energy songs were typically paired with a film like ours so we took this route when deciding which music would fit best. After finding the kind of music we wanted to stick with, we started picking a couple songs that we liked best and kind of sampled them over what we had envisioned for the rest of our film. After finding a couple possible options, it was then put up to me to reach out to a couple publishing companies to ensure we had the rights to their music for our film. This too

Production Blog: And so the Filming Begins!

Image
This is it! Filming of my short film has commenced. After all of the hard work that me and my group have put into preparing this short film over the past couple of weeks, it is finally time to begin. Me and my group start by going to our film location to begin setting up and start getting used to all of our equipment. At first, it took at little while as I, as well as my group mates, was not accustomed to all the moving parts of a film set, but as things progressed I started to get the hang of things. Once we had finished setting up, me and my group changed into our costumes and prepared to film. We took a little time to discuss how we believed every shot should be taken and from what angles, but this did not take long. The filming of the first scene was then underway. As an actor, I got into my position and ran through my lines quickly in my head once more, and my groupmates did the same. Our cameraman got into position and did a countdown to let us know exactly when the film would b

Production Blog: Setting up my Filming Times

Image
Me and my group have decided that we would dedicate a day to set up the times we should film our movie so that we do not make plans for those dates and times. My film has several different scenes as well as several different locations that these scenes take place. Scheduling for when we will film is very important especially with how busy all of our lives are and how things tend to pop up on our schedules spontaneously. The three locations that we will be filming at are Hamill Tire, the library, and my group mate Luke's house. Because these places are all relatively distant from each other, it just would not be possible to film all of the scenes in one day. So, me and my group discussed when we should film and what time we should do it at on each day. After discussion, we came up with first filming  Scene 1 at the library on February 18 at 2pm, Scene 2 on February 19 at 12pm at Hamill Tire, and Scene 3 at Lukes house on February 12th at 5pm.  I feel a lot more relief after fi

Production Blog: Shopping Continues

Image
After a relatively unproductive day of shopping the other day, me and my group are ready to get back into finishing what we started. I started the day by looking over the list of props and costumes that I had made in order to see exactly what I needed for the film. For my costume, I needed dark and shady clothing to match that a robber would wear and typical clothing of a trashy teenage boy. After looking this list over, I began to browse online for whatever I could not find in store. This was pretty much everything on the list as none of the stores had what I was looking for. As I began to browse, I began finding what I needed very easily and quickly compiled almost all of the things that I need for the film into one cart within an hour. I am really happy with the costumes I found as well as they were exactly what I was looking for. I now just have to wait for them to arrive! Overall, I am pleased with what I found and found this day to be much more productive than the last. Me

Production Blog: So it begins!

Image
This is it! Today marks the start of my production process and me and my group could not be more excited. After all of the weeks of planning and research it is finally time to begin the production of my film. Me and my group plan to spend the day buying props and costumes for our film as well as any other equipment we may need for filming.  Props help give a film a realistic image and are used to replace expensive or unrealistic items in a film.  Costumes are what actors wear in a film and are used to adapt to situations in the film to make it seem more realistic.   I started off by making a list of what we needed such as glasses for our costumes and fake money as one of our props. After this, I decided which stores I would hit up that would have most of what I needed all in one place. I started my adventure at party city which is well known for having lots of costumes and props that I would need. As I looked around, I realized a lot of what we needed was very specific and could not
